The History of Beautiful Nails

A glamorous manicure or pedicure is the easiest way to accessorize a new outfit or update your look for the new season. Nail bars have become increasingly more popular in recent times, but where does this obsession with our nails come from? Have we always taken care of our nails? We take a look at the history of nail care and outline some of the amazing tools that are available to us now.

Where did it all start?

Having well-tended nails was an important part of aristocracy in ancient times. In Egypt, royalty including Cleopatra, would use henna to stain their nails red to symbolize their status. In ancient China, people of immense stature would grow their nails very long to show their importance.

After the industrial revolution in the nineteenth century, technology became more advanced and new nail tools started to emerge. Most women looked after their nails at home using metal rods, acid and scissors, but in the late 1800s nail salons started to open up in America. They offered manicures to those who could afford it and well-tended nails became an important part of fashion.

When the movie industry started in the early nineteenth century and glamorous Hollywood actresses showed off perfectly manicured nails painted in glossy colours, the demand for nail polishes, nail protectors, and nail care tools exploded.
